Origami Winged Hearts

Updated: Jan 6, 2024

I will admit around this time of the year, I went on a bit of a splurge for Project Bloom. Through the winter emails that I had sent out, I was able to connect to the Neighbourhood Small Grants and receive a grant from them. With this money, I was able to purchase supplies and plan a more creative design for Project Bloom. From this, I made origami winged hearts to put up, and kits to give out to the public at Thompson Community Centre for Anti-Bullying/Pink Shirt Day.

Originally I had planned a drop-off to Suzie during February through my string of emails that I had sent out during the winter break. This originated from a possible drop-off in November where I was planning on making an origami turkey. However, this plan got scrapped due to renovations happening to the community centre around that week. As well, since I had received a grant, I wanted to go further with Project Bloom and had planned for a workshop of sorts. But due to Covid-19, which was getting worse during that time, it got called off, and I made a stand instead.

Unfortunately reflecting back on my video-making process this time, my planning did not go well. I was really frustrated as I had thought I had gotten better at time management considering the last few drop-offs, but this craft project was just very rushed. I quite frankly, was not that happy with the final result and thought it was one of the worst videos I had ever made. Since I rushed to finish the photoshoot in the morning and had done final edits last night, I happened to be late by 15 minutes. Overall, I really was disappointed in myself, as I realized that I had become busy with school again, and wasn't able to create a project to the quality I had wanted.

But thankfully all of this didn't matter when I handed the kits to Suzie, who was enthusiastic as ever. She gushed over the design and admired the marble paper I had picked. This had made me feel a lot better, and as we chatted about future plans for Project Bloom, all of the previous doubt I had washed away. Also because of my partnership with the Neighbourhood Small Grants, I actually got to share my project at their celebration. During the zoom call, I covered my meet-up with Suzie, talked about what I had achieved, and my mission statement. All of this was really exciting and I was glad to just share my project with the Richmond community (Through my camera angle really sucked as you could see my nostril flares)!
