Lower Mainland Purpose Society

Updated: Jan 6, 2024

As winter break came by, I adjusted my schedule better and made time for Project Bloom. Over the break, I had been able to contact a large number of places to do distributions for my community initiative. One of the places that responded back was the Lower Mainland Purpose Society. We were able to arrange a drop-off in January and a workshop in February. The Lower Mainland Purpose Society is a great place that supports all types of people and individuals through summer programs, family counseling, and even financial aid.

Looking back, the overall experience of prepping the kits was nice. Since I had more time and experience with this design, I was able to make the penguin samples with ease, and finish making the kits the night before. I was really proud of myself as I had been able to manage my time well. The meeting itself was quite pleasant. Even though I was quite nervous, I was able to communicate well and got to chat with Felicia Costea (Early Childhood Development Coordinator) and Elizabeth Cottam (ECD Team Leader) about their programs. They were really pleasant and welcoming, and I was able to have some small talk with them. It was really interesting to hear about their daily lives, learn about the Lower Mainland Purpose Society's beginnings, and understand their involvement in the programs. Before leaving, Felicia also confidently let me know that the kits would be in good hands and that she and Elisabeth were ecstatic to use them.

Around February, I also was able to host my first origami workshop with Elisabeth and her class! Unfortunately, because I had school, I ran out of time to finish the penguin craft. I also had a few technical difficulties with my camera, and doing setup since it was over zoom. I also forgot to turn off my camera when I left and didn't leave the meeting until I was at school (which was quite embarrassing)! But looking back, I think it went well, as the class listened to my instructions, seemed engaged, and tried really hard to follow my directions. Overall, I was really happy with how this meet-up turned out. And I look forward to reconnecting with Felicia and Elisabeth through Project Bloom, and finding the time to hopefully host a real origami session.
