Origami Remembrance Day Heart Workshop

Updated: Jan 7, 2024

November is the month used to remember veterans that fought in World War 1&2. For the craft workshop this time, I wanted to create a super easy design that almost anyone could follow. I found an origami heart design online that seemed simple enough and could easily be modified. To get the craft to match the theme, I decided to bring some black pens, sharpies, and red paper, so that the seniors could draw poppies or crosses on the hearts.

Unfortunately, I had to change the craft session from its usual time due to my school schedule changing. This led to me hastily setting up a meet-up date for the session. As a result, only one participant showed up which was a bit disappointing. However, we had a great time together and got to know each other. Throughout the craft, she was able to follow my steps easily. I didn't need to assist her in folding at any point and was able to lead her with my instructions. By making hearts together and drawing, we were able to converse about Japan and our families.

Although it was a letdown that the other usual participants didn't show up I wasn't too bothered by it. I learned from this interaction that it's good to build connections face-to-face and to start off small before going big. It was also truly refreshing that I could finally find a craft the seniors could make using their own abilities. With this new knowledge I acquired, I look forward to the next craft session where I can take what I learned and apply it.
